Taiwan Stresses Economic Interests in Japan-Philippines Maritime Negotiations

by admin477351

Taiwan is urging Japan and the Philippines to consider its interests as they engage in discussions about defining maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in the region. This call follows an announcement by Japan and the Philippines to initiate negotiations to establish maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims based on international law. Experts have pointed out that the areas under discussion may include zones that overlap with territories claimed by Taiwan.

Officials from Taiwan have indicated that both Japan and the Philippines have provided assurances that any agreements reached will not impose legal obligations on third parties and will adhere to international legal standards. Taiwan’s government is committed to maintaining dialogue with these nations to protect its maritime rights, including access to resources and fishing activities in the contested waters. They have also highlighted that current agreements with Japan and the Philippines are still in effect.

The situation unfolds amidst heightened regional tensions, particularly after China’s assertion of claims over waters to the east of Taiwan accompanied by coast guard patrols in the area. Taiwan has firmly rejected these claims, reiterating its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.

Philippine authorities have noted that formal negotiations with Japan have yet to commence and have emphasized that it is premature to predict the potential implications of any future agreement, especially concerning fishing rights or territorial claims.
