Taiwan’s air force is set to enhance its defensive infrastructure by constructing 26 additional fortified aircraft shelters, anticipating an increase in its F-16V fleet along the eastern coastline. Following the acquisition of 66 new F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, the total number of these advanced aircraft is projected to expand to between 110 and 120. These new jets are slated for deployment at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, which will complement the existing F-16V Block 20s stationed in Hualien County.
To ensure the protection of this growing fleet, the air force has earmarked a budget exceeding NT$6.88 billion for the construction of new shelters between 2027 and 2031 in Hualien and Taitung. The strategic plan involves erecting 22 shelters in Hualien, with an additional four in Taitung. Furthermore, Hualien will see the development of five general aircraft hangars accompanied by supporting facilities to accommodate transport aircraft.
The implementation timeline outlines the commencement of initial project management, surveying, and design work in 2027, with detailed design and contracting slated for 2028 and 2029. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2030 and reach completion by 2031. These shelters are integral to a “one aircraft, one shelter” strategy, aimed at enhancing the resilience of Taiwan’s fighter fleet during potential military crises. By dispersing aircraft to fortified facilities in Hualien and Taitung, the air force aims to preserve combat readiness and maintain critical interception, suppression, and homeland defense operations.
The new protective structures are designed to withstand explosive attacks, ensuring that a greater number of fighter jets remain operational even in the face of sudden aggression. Amid these developments, President William Lai has called upon military officers to swiftly adapt to rapid technological advances and the evolving global security landscape. He underscored the importance of bolstering joint operations, asymmetric capabilities, and future defense strategies, while advocating for the use of artificial intelligence as a supportive tool.
Lai further highlighted the necessity of sustaining military preparedness and continued investment in national defense. He emphasized that robust defense capabilities are crucial to safeguarding peace and defending Taiwan’s sovereignty. Through these initiatives, Taiwan aims to fortify its defensive posture and ensure the security of its air force assets in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
