The launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket has been postponed due to an engine malfunction that occurred just before its scheduled liftoff. The mission was set to take place at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas on Thursday, but the launch had to be aborted when several engines failed to ignite as planned. This issue triggered the rocket’s automatic abort system, leading the company to begin the process of offloading fuel from the spacecraft.
SpaceX announced that it aims to attempt the launch again in the coming days while its engineers work to identify and resolve the underlying cause of the engine problem. The Starship rocket is a crucial element in Elon Musk’s broader vision to enhance the Starlink satellite network, establish infrastructure in space, and eventually carry humans to the Moon and Mars.
This mission was poised to be Starship’s first significant test flight following SpaceX’s recent public offering. However, the delay in launch has had immediate financial repercussions, as the company’s stock experienced a decline of more than 6 percent in early trading.
SpaceX has funneled over $15 billion into the development of Starship, which is engineered to be entirely reusable. In addition to its commercial ambitions, the company is collaborating with NASA under contracts aiming to utilize the spacecraft for future missions to the lunar surface. Despite this progress, several technical milestones remain before astronauts can be safely transported aboard the vehicle.
