Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is set to enhance its operations by establishing a new site at the Baipu Industrial Park in Kaohsiung. This initiative aims to accelerate the testing and validation processes of semiconductor materials and equipment. Collaborating with Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Kaohsiung City Government, TSMC is positioning this facility to potentially boost validation efficiency by up to 50%, according to Vice President Jun He.
The proposed 3-hectare development will house two buildings equipped with modular facilities that can adapt to advancements in semiconductor technologies. These buildings will contain small clean rooms and laboratories dedicated to testing, research, and joint development in advanced packaging technologies, as well as materials and equipment. Additionally, TSMC plans to use this site as a training ground for specialists in advanced packaging and to bridge connections between Taiwanese suppliers and the global semiconductor supply chains.
This expansion aligns with the growing demand for advanced packaging, driven significantly by the surge in artificial intelligence applications. TSMC anticipates that its advanced packaging capacity, particularly in chip-on-wafer-on-substrate technology, will witness an annual growth rate exceeding 80% through the following year. This strong demand is expected to persist until 2029, underscoring the strategic timing of TSMC’s development in Kaohsiung.
Meanwhile, Taiwan’s semiconductor industry as a whole is on an upward trajectory, with revenue projections nearing $300 billion this year. This reflects a remarkable increase of over 40% compared to the previous year. Industry experts attribute this growth to the rising demand for AI, which is opening up opportunities in areas such as memory, high-bandwidth technologies, advanced packaging, and silicon photonics.
Despite these promising prospects, the industry is still grappling with challenges such as energy supply, the availability of skilled workers, and cybersecurity concerns. As TSMC and Taiwan’s semiconductor sector continue their expansion, addressing these challenges will be crucial to sustaining growth and maintaining their competitive edge in the global market.
