Amid increasing military pressure from China, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, has underlined the necessity of ongoing U.S. arms sales to bolster Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. He noted that Taiwan is ramping up its defense budget and is dedicated to improving its ability to counter potential security threats. Yui highlighted that while external assistance is valuable, Taiwan must also prioritize its own defense readiness.

The U.S. administration is currently reviewing a proposed $14 billion arms package intended for Taiwan. This initiative has garnered backing from U.S. lawmakers who argue that Taiwan’s defense requirements are becoming increasingly urgent in light of China’s escalating military presence in the region. Yui emphasized that the scale of military support should correspond to the level of threat, pointing to the regular Chinese military exercises, warship movements, and aircraft operations near Taiwan.

U.S. officials have reiterated that Washington’s policy regarding Taiwan remains consistent, affirming that support for Taiwan’s security is a crucial aspect of the relationship between the two nations. Taiwan, on its part, has expressed strong confidence in its enduring partnership with the United States, notwithstanding the ongoing tensions in the region.

Yui has made it clear that Taiwan’s objective is to safeguard its security and democratic way of life through defensive measures. He underscored that the island’s strategy involves not just relying on allies but significantly investing in its self-defense capabilities. This approach is particularly pertinent as China’s military activities continue to expand in proximity to Taiwan.
