As China and Germany intensify their bilateral cooperation in business and technology, a significant shift is occurring with expertise and innovation now traveling both ways between the two nations. A fresh joint research report, unveiled in Beijing, highlights this evolving dynamic, where technology and business insights are no longer flowing predominantly from Germany to China. This report was introduced at the China-Germany (China-Europe) Hidden Champions Forum 2026, an event in Beijing’s Shunyi district that brought together over 400 business leaders and representatives from Europe and China.
The research indicates a growing interest among European companies to expand their footprint in China. Approximately 38 percent of European firms surveyed expressed plans to boost their research and development investments in China. Furthermore, 40 percent of these companies are considering granting more autonomy to their Chinese branches, loosening ties from their German headquarters. This reflects a strategic move to harness the local market dynamics and innovation potential within China.
Simultaneously, the report points out that leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, including Li Auto and NIO, are making their mark in Germany by setting up research and design centers. This development underscores a burgeoning two-way technological exchange, where Chinese companies are also contributing to innovation in Germany, furthering collaborative efforts between the two countries.
The forum also saw the inauguration of a public service station aimed at assisting businesses in overcoming technical trade barriers. Additionally, a new partnership initiative was launched to encourage German and European firms to engage actively in Beijing’s economic and technological cooperation zone in Shunyi. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster a conducive environment for international business collaboration.
According to Tang Wenhong, Beijing is determined to enhance cooperation between Chinese and German enterprises and is keen on attracting more innovative companies. These initiatives are designed to bolster the city’s status as a global hub for science and technology, aligning with its vision to become a leading center of international business and innovation.
