IMF Boosts Taiwan’s 2026 GDP Growth Forecast to 10.7% Amid AI Demand

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has significantly raised its economic growth forecast for Taiwan in 2026, projecting a growth rate of 10.7%. This represents more than double its previous estimate of 5.2% announced in April, positioning Taiwan among the highest growth rates globally. The upward revision is largely attributed to the robust demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology and computing hardware.

According to the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, Taiwan is expected to have the second-highest economic growth rate worldwide, only behind Guyana, which is forecast to expand by 22.3%. South Sudan is anticipated to follow closely with a growth rate of 10.5%. In comparison, other major Asian economies such as Singapore and China are projected to grow by 5% and 4.5%, respectively, in 2026.

The IMF emphasized Taiwan’s crucial role in the global technology supply chain, particularly in sectors related to AI computing hardware. Together with South Korea, Taiwan accounts for about 62% of the global net trade in this sector, benefiting from the increasing demand for advanced semiconductors and computing equipment.

While Taiwan’s economy experienced an 8.8% growth in 2025, the IMF anticipates a moderation to 4.3% in 2027 as economic conditions evolve. Alongside the growth forecast, the IMF also adjusted its inflation expectations for Taiwan, with consumer prices projected to rise by 2% in 2026, up from an earlier estimate of 1.5%. The unemployment rate is expected to remain stable at 3.4% through 2026 and 2027.

Globally, the IMF predicts an economic growth of 3.1% in 2026, with an improvement to 3.4% in 2027. The Fund noted that technological investment and the capacity of countries to adapt to economic disruptions have bolstered growth, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainties in the energy market.
