Taiwan has expressed gratitude towards the European Parliament for its recent recommendation opposing China’s attempts to limit Taiwan’s participation in international organizations and exchanges. This move by the European Parliament underscores its commitment to supporting peace across the Taiwan Strait and fostering closer ties between Taiwan and the European Union.

The recommendation from the European Parliament emphasizes shared democratic values and highlights the existing economic, trade, and technological connections between Taiwan and the EU. It explicitly opposes any unilateral efforts to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through force or coercion. Furthermore, the recommendation criticizes China’s alleged use of pressure to curtail Taiwan’s international engagement and voices concerns over the extraterritorial application of Chinese laws.

Recognizing Taiwan’s strategic importance in the global semiconductor industry and high-tech supply chains, the European Parliament called for enhanced cooperation between the EU and Taiwan in areas like semiconductors, cybersecurity, and economic security. The recommendation also encourages the EU to prepare for negotiations on a bilateral investment agreement or other frameworks to strengthen cooperation in critical supply chains.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the European Parliament’s focus on Taiwan’s international participation and regional stability. The ministry affirmed Taiwan’s commitment to collaborating with the EU and other like-minded partners to bolster technological cooperation, safeguard critical supply chains, and counter foreign information manipulation.

This development highlights the growing significance of Taiwan-EU relations amid broader geopolitical tensions and concerns over the security of global technology and trade networks. Taiwan’s active role in international discourse and cooperation continues to be of paramount importance in maintaining regional stability and advancing global economic interests.
