The newly inaugurated Shengji Tunnel in Taipei is set to significantly enhance travel efficiency and ease traffic congestion in the Nangang District. Officially opened recently, this NT$1.878 billion infrastructure project connects Zhongxiao East Road with the access road to the National Biotechnology Research Park, providing a faster and more reliable route between Nangang and Sijhih District in New Taipei City.
With a total length of approximately 824 meters, including a 716-meter tunnel section, the Shengji Tunnel is expected to cut travel times during peak hours from 15–20 minutes to less than 10 minutes between the research park and the vicinity of Nangang Station. This improvement is crucial for commuters and logistics, as it alleviates the heavy traffic often experienced on Zhongxiao East Road Section 7 and Academia Road.
The tunnel’s design also includes features to enhance safety and accessibility. It offers an alternative route during flooding and other emergencies that may impact Academia Road. Additionally, a separate pathway has been constructed for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting safer and more sustainable transportation options.
The National Biotechnology Research Park, which began operations in 2018, has been a focal point for the growth of biomedical research and biotechnology activities in the region. It currently hosts more than 2,600 researchers and professionals, making the improved connectivity provided by the Shengji Tunnel vital for supporting the park’s ongoing development and collaboration efforts.
