The National Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) in Taiwan has unveiled the technical details of the Chiang Kung missile, an ambitious high-altitude interceptor project. This missile is expected to play a crucial role in Taiwan’s envisioned “T-Dome” integrated air defense network. Known alternatively as Tien Chien IV, the Chiang Kung is engineered to intercept ballistic missiles at altitudes reaching up to 70 kilometers. The system boasts a land-based vertical launch platform and operates with a two-stage solid-propellant rocket, featuring vectored thrust to enhance its maneuverability at elevated altitudes.
The capabilities of the Chiang Kung extend to its radar system, which is adept at identifying various target types and engaging multiple tactical ballistic missiles simultaneously, even in the face of electronic warfare threats. Additionally, the system is equipped with a mobile active electronically scanned array radar that is specifically designed to operate in conditions compromised by electromagnetic interference and GPS jamming. These features are set to provide Taiwan with a high-altitude interception capability that is currently absent from its defense arsenal, complementing existing systems under the proposed T-Dome network.
Despite the technological advancements that the Chiang Kung promises, the program is not without its obstacles. A significant concern is the budgetary constraints it faces. The missile was notably absent from Taiwan’s special defense budget, leading the Ministry of National Defense to pursue funding through a supplementary budget. This financial uncertainty raises concerns about potential delays in the acquisition schedule, which could have broader implications for the development of the T-Dome air defense network as a whole.
Officials have voiced warnings that funding delays could hinder the overall timeline for the Chiang Kung missile’s deployment and, by extension, the comprehensive implementation of the T-Dome network. As Taiwan continues to bolster its defense capabilities in the face of regional tensions, securing the necessary financial backing for the Chiang Kung program remains a critical priority for ensuring the timely advancement of its air defense strategy.
