US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the United States’ opposition to China’s recent coast guard patrols near Taiwan, asserting that these maneuvers threaten regional stability and heighten tensions throughout the Indo-Pacific. Rubio’s remarks came following a discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila. He emphasized that Washington routinely voices its concerns about Beijing’s activities surrounding Taiwan and reaffirmed the US commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation while opposing any efforts to limit access to international waters.
Last month, China initiated what it termed “special maritime law enforcement operations” around Taiwan. The Chinese government justified this action as a reaction to forthcoming maritime boundary talks involving Japan and the Philippines. In response, Taiwan has observed a rise in operations by Chinese coast guard ships in its vicinity and adjacent waters, which include radio warnings aimed at commercial vessels navigating the area.
Rubio highlighted that during his meeting with Wang Yi, both parties also discussed the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump to Beijing, scheduled for September. The discussions were described by both sides as constructive, with a mutual commitment to continuing diplomatic interactions to uphold strategic stability in the region.
