Taipei’s mayor, Chiang Wan-an, has unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize education in the city through a significant investment in artificial intelligence. This four-year initiative, valued at NT$9.2 billion (approximately US$288 million), aims to transform classrooms into modern learning environments equipped to prepare students for a future dominated by AI technologies.
A key component of the initiative involves outfitting each classroom with smart screens and enhancing digital learning platforms with AI-driven assistants. Additionally, the plan includes the development of advanced AI teaching tools and the creation of an AI Education Center located in the Beitou Shilin Technology Park. This center will play a crucial role in coordinating teacher training, developing curricula, and fostering collaboration between educational institutions and the technology industry.
The program also seeks to integrate more robotics, drones, and AI-powered devices into the classroom experience. By doing so, it aims to provide students with hands-on opportunities to engage with cutting-edge technologies, including systems that utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) for edge computing.
Beyond merely imparting technical skills, the initiative emphasizes the importance of responsible technology use. It aims to enhance digital literacy among students and address critical issues such as data privacy. The upgraded digital learning platform is designed to facilitate self-directed learning for students while also alleviating some of the administrative burdens on teachers, such as grading exams.
