China’s strategies for transnational repression reportedly include five main methods, according to the Taiwanese official. These encompass criminalizing anti-government speech made overseas, intimidating detractors by retaliating against their families, and utilizing international legal tools like Interpol red notices to track dissidents. Additionally, China is accused of labeling those who support pro-democracy movements as extremists and engaging in forced repatriations or abductions.
The official also brought attention to the operation of Chinese overseas police stations, which are allegedly used to monitor and exert pressure on critics residing in other countries. Such activities have sparked concerns about potential violations of international law and diplomatic norms, as they may undermine the sovereignty of foreign nations.
In response to these developments, Taiwan has taken steps to boost public awareness regarding the risks associated with travel to China. The government is also working to strengthen measures aimed at countering activities that could facilitate foreign interference, ensuring its citizens and residents are better informed and protected against these external pressures.
