During a five-day state visit to Taiwan, Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip Pierre has advocated for stronger cooperation with Taiwan, focusing on areas such as education, agriculture, renewable energy, and climate change. Prime Minister Pierre met with Taiwanese President William Lai in Taipei to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and reinforcing the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
Both leaders emphasized the shared challenges faced by Taiwan and Saint Lucia, particularly the impact of climate change. Pierre highlighted an ongoing drought in Saint Lucia, linked to the El Niño phenomenon, which underscores the necessity for enhanced water management systems and rainwater harvesting.
Education emerged as a significant area of focus in the discussions. Pierre expressed gratitude for Taiwan’s ongoing scholarship programs, which have benefitted over 400 Saint Lucian students pursuing higher education. He stressed the importance of expanding these scholarship opportunities and proposed the development of a modern cultural and creative arts center. Additionally, Pierre encouraged increased academic and professional exchanges, offering more pathways for Saint Lucian doctors, researchers, and students to engage with Taiwan.
President William Lai responded positively to Pierre’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. He noted the growing cooperation between the two countries in both government and private sectors. Lai announced that the Taiwan External Trade Development Council would organize the 19th Taiwan-Saint Lucia trade exhibition in Saint Lucia, featuring participation from over 70 local and Taiwanese companies to foster commercial partnerships and business connections.
Furthermore, President Lai expressed appreciation for Saint Lucia’s support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations, including its bid for full membership in the United Nations. Both leaders reaffirmed the importance of ongoing cooperation to address global challenges such as climate change and public health.
The talks between Pierre and Lai reflect a mutual intention to deepen the partnership between Saint Lucia and Taiwan through collaborative efforts in education, trade, sustainable development, and enhanced people-to-people exchanges.
