As global security dynamics become increasingly complex, the European Parliament has underscored the importance of building robust defenses against information manipulation and hybrid threats. In this context, Taiwan has been acknowledged for its resilience and technological prowess, making it a key partner for Europe in the fight against these multifaceted challenges.
A report from the Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield highlights Taiwan’s significant role in developing strategies to safeguard information integrity, media pluralism, and human rights rooted in democratic values. These efforts come amid growing concerns over China’s gray-zone tactics, which Taiwan has been actively addressing through comprehensive civil defense and resilience exercises.
The European Parliament report emphasizes Taiwan’s valuable experience in managing hybrid attacks and foreign information manipulation, positioning it as an exemplary model for the European Union’s own preparedness and resilience initiatives. The report suggests that Taiwan’s whole-of-society approach could offer practical insights for Europe as it navigates these security challenges.
Further, the report calls for enhanced collaboration and regular exchanges between the EU and like-minded partners in East Asia, such as Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. This cooperation is particularly crucial in areas like countering information manipulation and safeguarding critical infrastructures such as undersea communication cables.
Responding to the report, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) expressed appreciation for the recognition and reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with the EU and other allies. Taiwan aims to continue its proactive role in tackling hybrid threats and information manipulation, contributing to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
