The United States and Taiwan are intensifying their collaboration in the defense industry amid escalating security concerns, which are prompting increased investments and tighter supply chain integration between the two partners. This development was highlighted at the Taiwan-US Defense Industry Forum held in Taipei, where retired US Army General Charles Flynn commended Taiwan’s efforts to ramp up defense spending, enhance military modernization, and incorporate advanced technologies. General Flynn emphasized that Taiwan’s heightened investment reflects a robust commitment to safeguarding its security and sovereignty.

The forum witnessed its largest-ever US delegation, comprising 41 representatives, which underscores the growing interest of American defense firms in Taiwan’s defense sector. According to Flynn, the increasing number of participating companies signifies not only expanding business prospects but also the urgency driven by regional security threats. This gathering marks a significant step in the evolving defense relationships between the two nations.

Beyond traditional arms sales, Taiwan and the US are shifting towards a more comprehensive strategic industrial partnership. James Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, pointed out that Taiwan’s strengths—particularly in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and low-Earth-orbit satellite systems—can be leveraged for defense applications like drones, AI-enabled systems, and secure communications. Huang highlighted how Taiwan’s manufacturing prowess and system integration skills complement the advanced defense technologies of the US, creating ample opportunities for collaboration.

Rupert Hammond-Chambers, President of the US-Taiwan Business Council, noted that their cooperation aims not only to address Taiwan’s defense needs but also to bolster global supply chains. He described the synergy between US defense innovations and Taiwan’s technological sector as a solid foundation for developing a competitive defense industry ecosystem. This partnership is seen as crucial in maintaining resilience in defense supply chains and strengthening technological cooperation against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Additionally, Taiwan is expanding its defense engagement with European partners. Recent visits by representatives from Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic to Taiwan have focused on discussing defense technology cooperation and future reconstruction opportunities. These discussions included potential collaborations in the drone and information technology sectors, further reflecting efforts to enhance defense supply chain resilience and technological cooperation in response to shifting global challenges.
