Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has commenced a five-day state visit to Taiwan, with the aim of bolstering diplomatic ties and exploring avenues for cooperation between the two nations. During his visit, Pierre is set to engage in discussions with Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te and other senior officials, focusing on bilateral relations, shared interests, and potential collaborative opportunities.
In honor of Prime Minister Pierre’s visit, President Lai will conduct a military honours ceremony, while Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung will host a formal banquet. Accompanying Pierre on this diplomatic mission are Saint Lucia Attorney General Leslie Mondesir, Senator Allison A Jean, and Saint Lucia Development Bank Chairman Daryl Raymond.
The delegation’s itinerary includes visits to key Taiwanese landmarks and institutions, such as Cathay General Hospital, Taipei 101, and the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Museum of Innovation in Hsinchu. These engagements are likely designed to facilitate exchanges and foster understanding between the two countries.
This visit marks the fourth time Pierre has traveled to Taiwan since assuming the role of prime minister in 2021, underscoring the ongoing interaction between Saint Lucia and Taiwan. The diplomatic relationship between the two nations was first established in 1984, severed in 1997 when Saint Lucia shifted its diplomatic recognition to Beijing, and then restored in April 2007.
The visit is anticipated to provide a platform for both Taiwan and Saint Lucia to enhance their diplomatic engagement and pursue further cooperation on issues of mutual interest, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two governments.
