Taiwan Warns of Increased Chinese Gray-Zone Actions if Xi Wins Fourth Term

Tensions between Taiwan and China could escalate as Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Chui-cheng has expressed concerns over potential intensification of Chinese “gray-zone” activities should President Xi Jinping secure a fourth term. Chiu’s warning highlights the possibility of increased pressure across the Taiwan Strait, as Beijing might amplify efforts to expand its jurisdiction in the region and seek broader international acknowledgment of its territorial claims.

Chiu pointed out that China could more vigorously promote its “one country, two systems” framework concerning Taiwan, which the Taiwanese government opposes due to fundamental differences in political models and democratic values. The minister emphasized that China’s escalating military and diplomatic pressure contributes significantly to regional tensions, impacting the delicate status quo.

The warning comes amid ongoing concerns in Taiwan regarding Chinese gray-zone activities, which include maritime pressure and other measures designed to challenge existing cross-strait relations. Chiu also accused Beijing of utilizing historical figures and cross-strait exchanges to advance its political objectives, citing events commemorating the 160th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen’s birth as an example.

Chiu’s statements reflect Taiwan’s apprehension about China’s strategic maneuvers, which aim to assert control and influence over the region. The Taiwanese government continues to defend its democratic system and way of life against what it perceives as aggressive attempts by China to alter the established order.
